Year 4 Multiplication Timestable Check

In Year 4, it is an expectation that children know their multiplication tables up to 12 × 12. In June 2022, all Year 4 pupils will sit a Multiplication Times Tables Check in school. This is a compulsory test, which all pupils in Year 4 will sit nationally. 

The MTC is an on-screen check consisting of 25 times tables questions. Your child will answer 3 practice questions before moving on to the official check, and will then have 6 seconds to answer each question. On average, the check should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.

How we support children and parents

At Newcroft, times tables are taught explicitly during Maths lessons, as well as incorporating them into other activities throughout the day to develop their fluency, such as: songs, games and starter activities.

In the first week of Autumn 2, we have sent home an 'MTC' pack. This provides resources to help you support your child at home with learning their times tables and developing their fluency. The pack consists of:

• A 12 × 12 times tables coloured chart
• A laminated 12 ×12 times tables chart to complete
• A laminated blank times tables grid
• A CPG Year 4 10-Minute Weekly Workout Booklet
• A list of YouTube links for times tables songs and websites for times tables games (double sided)

It is important that your child is regularly logging into and playing Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) at home.

Your child’s teacher will be setting them specific times tables to be practicing and will be monitoring their progress within school. We recommend this is done at least 3 times per week, as it will help embed their times tables knowledge, as well as developing their fluency over time.
