Our topic this half term has continued to be The Stone Age. We started the half term with a very exciting Stone Age workshop. The children all learnt about the evolution of homosapiens during this time and looked at the skulls and differences between homosapiens and homoneanderthalis. We carried out our own mammoth hunt, made stone age weapons, drew cave paintings and undertook an archaeological dig for ancient artefacts.
The rest of our topic has focused on our Science link with rocks, soils and fossils. We have been finding out about the different types of rocks and their properties. Over the coming weeks, we will be conducting some experiments to help us explore different types of soils. The children have already enjoyed learning about Mary Anning, the famous fossil hunter, and have written biographies about her life.
In maths, we have been really focusing on our times tables and trying to increase how fluent we are with our recall. The children are practising in a variety of ways including multiplication wheels, times tables grids, times table rock stars and learning Supermovers times tables songs.
We are also learning about shapes, fractions, measures and statistics this half term. In addition to this, we will be continually revisiting addition and subtraction strategies throughout the half term to ensure that all children are confident with column methods.
Children have been assessed against the year 3 and 4 common exception words and weekly spelling lists are based on these assessments. Please continue to practise these at home ready for our next review.
We ask that parents ensure that PE kit is in school all week and sent home as required for washing through the term and at the end of a half term. A reminder that as the weather gets colder, we ask that parents send their child with a warm jumper and jogging bottoms for outdoor PE sessions. Miss Newton's class have PE on Wednesdays and Miss Hunt and Mrs McConnell’s class have PE on Wednesday's and Friday's.
If you have any concerns, questions or queries about your child's progress, please get in touch via WEDUC or the office.
