During Autumn 2, 2020, all 389 of our pupils took part in our annual pupil survey. We are thrilled with the results; most notably that our children all feel tha...
In the Dandelion books discuss the target phoneme with your child. This is explained in the ‘How to use’ page at the start of every book. This tells you what phoneme your child is learning and the tricky words your child will need to be able to read to decode the book. Practise reading these words before you start. It also gives you a list of vocabulary that you can discuss with your child. Each book in the Dandelion series also includes a game and sometimes questions for discussion. This helps to practise and consolidate the learning in a fun way.
Build enthusiasm about the text by asking your child to predict what might happen in the story or what might the text be about. Discuss what appears on the front cover. Do they know the text type? Can they tell you the author/writer/poet? Encourage them to read the blurb to find clues.
Ask your child to read aloud and encourage them to use expression when a character is speaking and change the tone of their voice. Model this for your child.
If your child comes to a word they are finding tricky to read, break the word down for them by hiding some of the sounds and slowly revealing them to the child so they can segment the word and then blend it together.
Always encourage your child to use a dictionary or an online resource to find the meaning of new words they read to extend their understanding of vocabulary.
After reading with your child ask them if they enjoyed the book and why. What did they like/dislike? When discussing the book could they refer to any experiences in their own life that related to the text.
Bug Club is an engaging online world that captures children’s love for reading and imagination in supporting them to become a lifelong reader. Bug Club provides a wide range of books that your child can read on a tablet or laptop.
Your child’s class teacher will select books on Bug Club for your child to read, based on the book band they are working on. For children still learning phonics, these books will link to the ‘phase’ of letters and sounds they are working on. Children, with the support of an adult at home, can then read these as part of their home reading. They are asked questions as they read the text, in a fun and interactive way.
The programme allows the children to practise their skills of word reading and comprehension It will form part of our weekly homework in all year groups.
Your child can earn golden coins by regularly reading at home, which they can spend in a rewards area of the website. Bug Club should be used alongside reading the book banded books that are sent home from school. Please make a note in your child’s diary if you have read a book or used Bug Club, to ensure teachers award their dojo points.
The programme will be launched to your child in an assembly during the first week of Autumn 2, 2020, where they will be shown how to access and use the resource.
