Reading is at the heart of our school curriculum. We firmly believe that being able to read unlocks the curriculum for our children and we are extremely proud of how we teach reading and inspire pupils through literature at Newcroft.
We teach reading explicitly, as part of our daily English lessons. This includes VRIC sessions, daily phonics lessons, group reading, interventions, 1:1 reading with teachers, support staff and volunteers.
Our pupils are also taught the skills of reading and are immersed in literature through the non core curriculum.
Newcroft has launched Bugclub this year! Bugclub is an engaging online world that captures children’s love for reading and imagination in supporting them to become a lifelong reader. Bugclub provides a wide range of texts that your child can read on a tablet or laptop. Teachers will select texts for your child to read and your child will also be asked to answer questions about the text. The children can also access this resource independently.
All our children read book banded books, following this system from EYFS to Year 6 and also take home reading for pleasure books from the library to promote a love of reading. We use a range of book schemes and individually sourced texts from the first class authors to inspire our children.
This chart shows the National Book Banding System which we follow at Newcroft. When your child reaches Diamond they are classified as an independent reader.
