Autumn Term 1 2026

Curriculum

Welcome to the first half term of Year 1! We hope you all had an incredible summer holiday, and your teachers can’t wait to get started on all of the exciting learning they have planned.

This half term, our topic is ‘Who Are We?’ In History, we will be exploring our own history and thinking about our personal timelines, starting from when we were babies and leading up to the present day. We will talk about important events, memories and changes throughout our lives.

In Science, we will be learning all about the human body, identifying and labelling different parts of our bodies. We will also explore our five senses and learn about what each sense helps us to do.

In Design and Technology, we will be designing and making our own fruit and vegetable smoothies! We will explore different flavours and combinations before learning how to safely use a table knife and manual juicer.

In PE, we will be developing our ball skills and fundamental movements, practising skills such as throwing, catching, rolling, moving and changing direction.

In Maths, we will be securing our knowledge of Place Value within 10, Addition and Subtraction within 10, and Geometry: Shape. We will also use Numbots to strengthen our number bonds and build confidence with number facts.

We will also be going on a Shepshed Trail to explore our local area in more detail. We will become geographers as we look carefully at our surroundings and identify different human and physical features.

We have a very exciting half term ahead, and we can’t wait to see all of the wonderful learning, exploring and discovering that Year 1 will do!

PE Days

Both classes have PE on Mondays and Fridays.

Please make sure your child has the correct PE kit in school throughout the week, ready for both indoor and outdoor activities.

Reading

This half term, we will continue to encourage children to develop a love of reading through our Regular Readers initiative.

Please try to read with your child for a minimum of 5 minutes each day. To be classed as a regular reader, children should read at least three times each week.

Your child will have three books:

  • An SFA phonics book that they are currently working on during phonics lessons.
  • An additional reading book with a white sticker and step number.
  • A free-choice book for them to enjoy.

Please also use the phonics packs provided to practise the GPCs and red words that your child has been learning during their phonics lessons.

Thank you for your continued support in encouraging a love of reading at home!

Homework

Spellings will be given out on a Monday, and children will be tested on these spellings the following Monday to monitor their progress.

Please support your child in reading for a minimum of 5 minutes each day, with at least three reading sessions each week.

Children should also regularly practise their Maths skills and number bonds on Numbots to help develop their confidence and fluency with number
